Clark Civil will lead an effort to design and construct the MD 355 Crossing in Bethesda, MD. The crossing will be comprised of a new below-grade pedestrian tunnel under Rockville Pike (MD 355), connecting the National Institutes of Health campus with the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center campus. The team also will construct a 49-foot-diameter, 128-foot-deep shaft with a 30-foot-long connector tunnel into the existing Medical Center Metro. The shaft will contain a new elevator system allowing passengers to access the Metro from the Walter Reed campus.

The new structure will feature a combination of concrete, granite, and glass finishes. To maintain continuity with the Metro's aesthetic, the tunnel ceiling will incorporate acoustic panels with recessed can lights and quarry tile finish flooring.

Atkinson, Clark Foundations, and C3M Power Systems are also a part of the project team. Atkinson will perform shaft excavation, tunneling, and break through work to the WMATA Station, and Clark Foundations will provide excavation support; C3M will perform electrical work throughout the project.

Design is underway; construction is anticipated to begin in Spring 2017 and the project is slated to reach substantial completion in June 2020.
