The Champlain Substation project renovates and expands a 90-year-old substation, providing new 230 kilovolt (kV) and 69 kV service using gas-insulated substation (GIS) technology.
The scope involves the demolition of the open-air switchyard and building while preserving the historic façade, the construction of a 43,000-square-foot substation building, and the installation of 8,000 linear feet of new duct bank throughout downtown DC.
Together with the Harvard and Takoma Substations, this project is part of the Capital Grid initiative, which is designed to enhance system reliability and resiliency.
