Originally constructed in 1905, the U.S. Court of Appeals building suffered severe cracking during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. In a nationally recognized effort, Clark completely restored the U.S. Court of Appeals, inside and out, and ensured the building could withstand future seismic events.
The Clark project team installed seismic plates beneath the building’s structural columns and reinforced walls and floors. The building features intricate architectural elements including elaborately carved doors and lavish millwork. Each of these elements was carefully removed, refinished, and replaced. The project team also patched and repaired the building’s Italian Renaissance-style granite exterior.
