San Francisco Civic Center

The San Francisco Civic Center project included renovating and updating the 200,000 square-foot Earl Warren Building and constructing the new 14-story, 830,000 square-foot Hiram W. Johnson State Office Building that connects to the renovated facility. Covering one city block, it is home to approximately 11 state agencies with over 2,100 employees. The State Supreme Court and First District Court of Appeals occupy the renovated building; the new structure houses the Administrative Office of the Courts, Department of Justice, Department of Industrial Relations, as well as offices for the Governor, Attorney General, and legislators. In total, the Civic Center consolidated 18 state leases throughout the San Francisco area. 

The project was delivered on budget and on schedule. By overlapping the design and construction activities, the project took only 42-months to complete — less than half the time it would have taken using traditional design-bid-build delivery. The careful planning and open communication between the owner and design-build team members enabled them resolve problems in an innovative and efficient manner.
