MetroSouth Medical Center Alternate Care Facility
Clark, in collaboration with architect Perkins+Will, transformed the MetroSouth Medical Center—a shuttered hospital south of Chicago—into an alternate care facility (ACF) to treat COVID-19 patients.
The team delivered 585 surge medical beds in just 26 days, converting numerous spaces at the existing facility such as the emergency department, labor and delivery, and ICU, as well hospital office space, into patient bed areas. The team transformed MetroSouth’s original 313 beds with 30 ICU rooms into 585 beds with 265 high acuity rooms. Through a collaborative design-build approach, work progressed without traditional construction documents while maintaining strict quality and safety protocols under the aggressive schedule.
Despite these constraints, the team succeeded in maximizing bed spaces while meeting the latest standards for treatment and infection control. In addition to meeting the project's healthcare goals, the team successfully delivered the MetroSouth Alternate Care Facility on budget and four days early.
