Located on the East Baltimore medical campus of Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the Bunting-Blaustein and Koch Cancer Research Buildings are state-of-the-art medical research laboratories.
The 220,000-square-foot Bunting Blaustein building includes research areas for cancer biology, hematologic malignancies, solid tumor research, urologic oncology cell and gene therapy, molecular virology, and gastrointestinal cancer. It also includes a 6,000-square-foot animal facility, bio-lab, glass wash, irradiators, and laboratory services. The floor-to-floor height in the laboratory areas allows for two floors of office space for every one floor of laboratory space. The result is ten stories of office space at each end of the building, with five stories of laboratories between the ends.
The adjacent 272,00 square-foot Koch building contains five floors of laboratories in the center separated by five levels of mechanical space. This interstitial space makes it easier to modify the laboratories in the future. Like the Bunting Blaustein building, two floors of office space line up with every one level of mechanical and laboratory space, which results in 10 levels of office space at each end of the building. Also included is an expanded barrier vivarium, BL-3 laboratory space, and support offices.
A connector building links the Bunting Blaustein and Koch buildings. It serves as a loading dock for the southwest area of the campus and supports shared vivarium and lab functions. The area between the buildings is landscaped to create a pedestrian mall equipped with pergolas, benches, and fountains.
