General Motors Vehicle Engineering Center

...they [Clark] are experts at partnering with the owner throughout the [constructability] process, they work hard at integrating their team with the owner and design team, and, finally, they adeptly manage all preconstruction activities to ensure that the schedule is maintained.

The General Motors (GM) Vehicle Engineering Center is a design facility and office building houses over 8,000 design engineers. The center provides the latest technology systems, labs, the famous GM modeling shop, and ancillary facilities to support their work. Clark ensured their client's operations could go on uninterrupted throughout construction.

The GM Vehicle Engineering Center includes a new eight-story, 1.2 million square-foot building and the renovation of the adjacent 45 year-old, three story, one million square-foot building. The new tower is a structural steel frame clad with a striking aluminum and glass unitized curtain wall system. As a signature building for the GM high-tech design-engineering group, state-of-the-art technology is incorporated throughout. Systems were designed to be energy efficient, and inside the new tower is an innovative ductless under-floor HVAC system.

With over 2,000 occupants at the time of construction, the existing portion of the building needed to remain open and fully functional to support both continued automotive development and GM worldwide manufacturing. Moreover, their location on an active campus required detailed, significant pre-planning of traffic and campus detours, planned utility outages, along with special staging and material delivery coordination.

Clark minimized client disruption throughout the demolition, excavation, and construction process. The team's emphasis on detailed coordination and a phased construction and move in schedule were key to their success. Clark also ensured compliance with GM's strict security requirements, including worker registration, inspections and access restrictions to secure areas.
