Construction Tech Community Honors Chase Center Project Team for Advanced Modeling Efforts

Clark Construction Group and joint venture partner Mortenson Construction have been recognized by Bentley Systems and Autodesk – two of the AEC industry’s leading technology and software providers – for their efforts to push the boundaries of innovation and raise the bar on construction planning and schedule management though advanced 4D modeling. The joint venture team implemented a robust 4D strategy throughout the development and construction of Chase Center to add certainty to the building process, and in turn for the Golden State Warriors, on one of the most logistically-challenging construction projects in the country. They successfully delivered the sports and entertainment complex on schedule in August.

Bentley Systems recognized Mortenson | Clark’s modeling endeavors during their 2019 Year in Infrastructure (YII) Conference in Singapore this October. The organization’s annual awards program celebrates firms advancing infrastructure design, construction, and operations throughout the world. The Chase Center project was among 54 finalists selected from 571 nominations spanning 60 countries. Mortenson | Clark representatives presented to a panel of judges, industry leaders, and trade media during the conference as part of the winner selection process. Chase Center took top honors in the 4D Construction Modeling category. Click here to view a full list of YII 2019 Award winners.

The joint venture team’s forward-thinking approach to automation in 4D model management also received praise from Autodesk, earning an AEC Excellence Award in the Construction – Large Project (Over $500 Million) category. Autodesk’s awards program recognizes small, medium, and large-sized projects for infrastructure design, building design, and construction that are making an impact with advanced approaches and pioneering achievements. Chase Center was one of only nine winning projects selected out of a pool of more than 230 entries. The Excellence Award was presented on November 19 during the Autodesk University Conference in Las Vegas. Click here to view a complete list of AEC Excellence Award winners.

Chase Center encompasses 2 million square feet of construction spread across five unique structures situated on a shared podium. With a demanding 31-month, 36,000-activity schedule, a highly-complex design, challenging site logistics, and more than 1,500 workers on site at peak construction, Mortenson | Clark leveraged technology to heighten both planning efforts and the execution of work. The 4D model provided a platform to develop, test, and resolve schedule scenarios throughout the lifecycle of the project, ensuring predictability, and increasing efficiency and performance.

“Our team’s use of modeling technology supported a smarter, safer, and more effective work plan and allowed us to build precisely to it,” noted Brian Nahas, Mortenson’s senior integrated construction manager and VDC lead for the Chase Center project. “But our success would not have been possible without the right jobsite culture in place.”

Inspired by the forward-thinking, tech-centric community in which Chase Center resides, and the Warriors persistent pursuit of excellence, Mortenson | Clark set out to foster a culture of purposeful innovation from the project’s earliest stages. “Our project team wholeheartedly embraced the opportunity to find new and better ways to innovate on site, and that effort yielded tangible and compelling results in all aspects of our work,” said Jim McLamb, Clark senior vice president and project director in charge of Chase Center’s construction. “Most importantly, it enabled us to deliver a best-in-class facility for our client safely, and on schedule.”
