Atkinson led the replacement construction of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Cedar River Bridge. Designed to accommodate fuselage shipments traveling to and from Boeing's Renton facility, the project entailed the removal of the existing steel truss, which was originally set in 1914, as well as repairs to the substructure and the installation of new steel girders. Atkinson completed the project a month ahead of schedule.

Atkinson implemented a bridge-rolling method on the BNSF Cedar River Bridge Replacement project. This innovative technique allowed the demolition of the existing truss and assembly of the new girder to take place on land outside the riparian zone.

This environmentally sensitive project was completed during several salmon runs in the Cedar River, one of the state’s environmental jewels. Atkinson used the latest best-management practices to reduce erosion and manage stormwater flow. Despite the highly sensitive and potentially dangerous surroundings, Atkinson managed the entire construction process with minimal impact to the environment.
