Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Marks Grand Opening of UM Capital Region Medical Center

LARGO, MD – On June 8, Clark Construction Group joined Governor Larry Hogan and representatives from University of Maryland Capital Region Health (UM Capital), University of Maryland Medical System, and Prince George’s County, for the ribbon-cutting of the new University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center hospital.
The 620,000-square-foot hospital, which replaces the 75-year-old Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly, provides enhanced access to high-quality healthcare for residents of Prince George’s County and the surrounding communities. The new 11-story patient tower features 205 private patient rooms, 41 emergency department treatment bays, 32 intensive care beds, two endoscopy suites, and eight operating rooms. The state-of-the-art medical center provides spaces for clinical services including emergency care, neonatal intensive care, behavioral health, neurosciences, orthopedics, labor & delivery, critical care medicine, and Level II trauma.
Despite the challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, Clark reached substantial completion on the project in October ten days ahead of schedule. Since project turnover, Clark has worked alongside UM Capital and the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) to ensure a smooth activation process.
"I know first hand the great medical teams at UM Capital Region Health, and the challenges they faced in an aged-out facility," said Andrew Moore, a project manager at Clark who helped oversee the construction of the new Medical Center. "It means the world to me to have been a part of the team that delivered this much-needed facility to my family, friends, and the Prince George's County community."
Participation from small, local, county-based, and minority businesses throughout the construction process was a priority for all project stakeholders. In collaboration with S.M. Jackson Government Business Solutions, LLC, Clark’s small business compliance advisor, Clark exceeded all small business goals and awarded $30.9 million in contracts to County Based Minority Business Enterprises (CBMBE) for total percentage participation of 13.5%, exceeding the goal of 10%, as well as a total of $177.9 million, or 77.86% CBMBE, Minority Business Enterprises (MBE), and Locally-based Business Enterprises (LBE) vendors, surpassing the goal of 25%.
Among Prince George’s County MBEs that worked on the project were Estime Enterprises, Inc. and Columbia Enterprises Inc., Clark’s partners who provided project and construction management services.
The University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center continues Clark’s reputation of delivering world-class hospital projects that strengthen our communities. Recently completed health care projects include the Stanford Adult Hospital, Fort Bliss Replacement Hospital, Suburban Hospital North Building, and Highland Hospital.
UM Capital Region Medical Center will officially open on June 12.
