Meet Clark Summer Associate Scott Blaha
August 20, 2024
Clark's summer associate program offers students opportunities to build their skills in real-world scenarios, including making connections and developing their networks. During the 12-week program, participants gain insight into the daily planning, decision-making, and communication required for successful projects.
Hear firsthand from Scott Blaha, a Clark summer associate working on the North Hollywood High School Modernization project in California.
Describe your role at Clark.
I’m currently a summer associate in the Western Region at the North Hollywood High School Modernization project. We’re working on the second phase, which consists of tenant improvement renovations to classroom buildings and the construction of a new auditorium building. My focus is on systems, and some of the roles and tasks I’ve championed throughout my time at Clark include managing submittals and RFIs , analyzing BIM models for potential clashes among trades, reviewing and submitting change orders, and reviewing trade contractor billing.
Where do you go to school?
I’m a senior pursuing a bachelor of science in civil engineering at California State University Northridge, with an expected graduation of Spring 2025.
What is a fun fact that someone might not know about you?
I’ve been playing guitar since I was seven years old, and it’s a hobby that I’m pretty passionate about today.
How have your background or interests shaped you into the builder you are today?
I started working in construction right after high school, on intensive systems-related projects for a plumbing and mechanical subcontractor. I had the opportunity to work on educational facilities, laboratories, hospitals, and commercial buildings – including a Clark project! These experiences gave me a rush of excitement, and I felt fascinated by how many components go into making a building functional and fully operational. Being a summer associate at Clark has allowed me to expand my knowledge even more. I’ve been able to contribute to projects that will benefit many people, which is my ultimate reason for working in construction.
What drew you to Clark?
The people and the work products. During my time with a subcontractor on a Clark project, I was impressed by both the great Clark project team and the exceptional quality of work that the company delivers.
This is your third year as a summer associate at Clark. What accomplishment from your time here are you most proud of?
At the Century City Center project, I was able to witness the preparation and execution of a 10-foot thick mat slab foundation concrete pour. This experience gave me insight and knowledge into preparing for a large-scale definable feature of work and the type of coordination required with project stakeholders.
What has been your favorite part of your Clark experience?
My favorite part of my Clark experience has been the connections I’ve made, especially with the company leadership I’ve met during the capstone and PDP events. Everyone has unique experiences in the construction industry and within Clark, and I’ve found it helpful to hear everyone’s advice on how to succeed and grow within our company.
What is one of the most important things you've learned during your time at Clark?
The most important thing that I have learned throughout my time at Clark is to always have a plan. From work in the field to planning your day, have a clear vision – with attention to quality and timelines – of what needs to get accomplished to reach certain goals or milestones and how you’re going to get there.
