Builders at Heart: Steve Wilhelm
November 11, 2025
This article is part of our series, Builders at Heart, where we highlight the passions and backgrounds of the Clark team — the things that shape us — that allow us to tackle challenges head-on, solve complex problems, and build what matters.
Meet Steve Wilhelm, a carpenter foreman with Clark Civil for over 30 years.
Tell us a little bit about your background.
I was born and raised in western Maryland, in Lonaconing, and I am the second youngest out of eight brothers and sisters.
Who has had the most influence on your life and why?
My father has had the most influence in my life. Ever since I was young, he taught me everything about how to be the best version of myself, such as the importance of doing the job right and being on time.
When did you start in the industry?
I began my career in construction in 1971. For the first 10 years, I was setting steel for bridges, which I really enjoyed because I got to work up high. Then, I began working with a concrete subcontractor for another 10 years before joining Clark in the 90s, back when it was the George Hyman Construction Company.
What made you pursue a career in construction?
A friend of mine was working in construction at the time and he recommended that I try it out, and the rest is history! I can’t imagine myself in any other industry.
Tell us more about your current role.
Nowadays, I do a little bit of everything. Every morning I walk the site to identify and address what needs to be done or fixed. Most recently, I also oversee anything related to make-ready, to ensure that the job continues to move along and everyone has what they need to fulfill their role.
What do you like most about your current role?
I love to see the finished product, especially knowing what all went into getting to that point. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve also thoroughly enjoyed being a mentor to the younger generation through hands-on experiences. In fact, there’s come to be a saying: “If Steve’s still doing it, then so can I.”
What is your proudest accomplishment?
Professionally, I am most proud of my work at the White House around 1991. Having the opportunity to work at such a historic and important site is something I still brag about today. Personally, being able to work with my son, Shane. We’ve been a team for the past 30 years of my career with Clark.
Any advice for someone starting in construction?
If you’re going to work in this industry, you have to put your mind to it. You are your biggest source of motivation and accountability. There is nothing more important than showing up every day prepared to get the job done.
