Construction on the West Orange High School Replacement is underway in Winter Garden, Fla., for the Orange County Public Schools system. Clark Construction Group, LLC broke ground on the project in mid-November and, since then, has cleared the site, performed selective demolition and constructed a temporary student parking lot. Foundation, underground MEP and site utility work are currently in progress as well.
The new 377,000-square-foot facility is being developed next to the current West Orange High School on both new and existing school district property totaling more than 61 acres. The new high school will replace the current school, built in the 1970s, with an up-to-date campus.
The replacement campus is designed for 2,776 students. The design is based on a prototype, by SchenkelShultz Architecture, of Orlando, Fla., which has been used for several previous schools. SchenkelShultz modified the orientation of the buildings for this particular site.
The new West Orange High School will feature a courtyard surrounded by eight buildings - an administrative building; a media center/gymnasium; three, two-story classroom buildings; an auditorium/music building; a cafeteria/energy plant; and a remote field house for athletic programs. This project also includes related drives, parking lots, athletic fields, outdoor activity areas and site utilities.
The new campus is scheduled to be completed in June 2008. After school personnel relocate to the new buildings, Clark will begin the second phase of construction. Phase II will consist of demolishing the existing campus and converting it to student and staff parking. It is scheduled to be completed in April 2009.
R.L. Burns, Inc., of Orlando, is partnering with Clark on this project. Other team members include Tilden Lobnitz Cooper, of Orlando, the structural design consultant; Klima Weeks Civil Engineering, of Altamonte Springs, Fla., the civil engineering design consultant; and Matern Professional Engineering, P.A., of Maitland, Fla., which will provide MEP engineering services.
