General Services Administration (GSA) awarded Clark Construction Group, LLC a $54 million contract to build a 330,000-square-foot, six-story office building in Silver Spring, Md. Known as CDER 2 (Center for Drug Evaluation and Research), the project is part of a master plan to consolidate the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s laboratory and office facilities on the White Oak campus, formerly the U.S. Navy facility at the Federal Research Center - Naval Ordinance Laboratory.
The concrete structure is divided into two sections connected by a six-story glass and metal panel lobby. The composite skin features brick construction accented with metal panels and cast stone. Comprised mainly of office space, the building will also contain a conference center and coffee bar. Typical floors include raised access flooring throughout and full fit out of four floors. The raised access flooring will accommodate a unique under floor air distribution (UAFD) system.
Additional team members include Kling in association with RTKL Associates, Inc., both of Washington, D.C., as architect and Heery International of Landover, Md. as construction manager. Completion is scheduled for first quarter of 2008.
