Clark Construction recently earned three awards from the Design-Build Institute of America in its national competition. Caltrans District 7 in Los Angeles received the highest honor - the National Design-Build Award for Public Sector Building over $15 million. The Blue Line Extension into Prince George’s County, Md. earned the Design-Build Excellence Award in the Transportation Over $50 million category. In addition, the Solano County Government Center in Fairfield, Calif. received a merit award in the Public Sector Building over $15 million category.
Caltrans District 7 Headquarters
Caltrans District 7 Headquarters is an exceptionally successful design-build project, recognized for its environmental achievement, civic presence, cost, architectural innovation and aesthetic power. Located at First and Main Streets in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, the 1.2 million-square-foot complex is comprised of a 13-story tower with 756,000 square feet of office space with four levels of subterranean parking for 1142 cars. Clark’s design-build partner was the architectural firm of Morphosis from Santa Monica, Calif.
The $165 million building serves as a home to both the California Department of Transportation’s District 7 and the Los Angeles Department of Transportation. As the largest project built under the State’s Excellence in Public Building Program, the design features a number of components not usually associated with government spaces, including an operable exterior scrim wall, skip/stop elevator system, a four-story high exterior integrated neon art sculpture, and a building integrated photovoltaic system.
Blue Line Extension into Prince George’s County, Md.
Clark completed a $92.9 million addition to Washington, D.C.’s Metrorail system, adding two new stations to the Blue Line at Morgan Boulevard and Largo Town Center in Prince George’s County, Maryland for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. HSMM/STV, a joint venture between HSMM of Roanoke, Va. and STV Architects of Vienna, Va., provided the architectural design.
Using the design-build project delivery method, the team completed two stations, a large parking structure and day care center nearly two years faster than any previous single station completed under the owner’s traditional design-bid-build method.
Solano County Government Center
Encompassing three city blocks, this project includes a 300,000-square-foot six-story office building, a 42,000-square-foot two-story office building and a 1000-space five-story parking structure, expansive public plaza and smaller public courtyard. Consolidating 16 public agencies, the Government Center is the largest project ever undertaken by Solano County. Johnson Fain of Los Angeles, the County’s master architect, developed the design concept for the project. URS of Sacramento was the County’s construction manager.
Clark’s design-build partner KMD of San Francisco completed the bridging design of the project with the latest sustainable design technologies and recycled materials. Exceeding Title 24 regulations, the center includes high efficiency fans and lamps and low ambient lighting systems along with a photo-voltaic panel system to allow for solar energy recovery. To further maintain indoor air quality, high occupancy spaces maintain variable-flow air ventilation by allowing fresh outdoor air into the building through an innovative injection fan and airflow measuring station. A “gray water” recovery system has been installed in the facility for future use, while all plumbing fixtures feature flow restrictors to reduce water use.
