Clark Interiors Completes American Red Cross National Headquarters in D.C.

— Construction is complete on the restoration and modernization of the American Red Cross National Headquarters at 430 17th Street in northwest Washington. Directly adjacent to the Ellipse of the White House, this 60,000-square-foot national historic landmark was constructed in 1915 and served as the original operational center for all American Red Cross activities. Clark Interiors served as general contractor on this renovation project.

The demolition package featured asbestos and lead abatement activities, space for a new stair and a wider ADA-compliant traction elevator, careful protection of three rare Tiffany windows (considered to be the largest suite of any secular Tiffany windows to remain in their original location), and the restoration of historic light fixtures and door hardware. During the build-back phase, Clark Interiors preserved the high-end finishes of the east side of the building and modernized the entire structure. This effort included replacement of all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, security and life-safety systems; a complete roof replacement; the installation of new water, sanitary sewer, and fire services; and the installation of new exposed aggregate sidewalks and asphalt resurfacing. Clark also replaced 116 windows, with a custom window package that replicated the original historic details.

Shalom Baranes Architects of Washington, D.C. designed the demolition, build-back and windows packages, and Girard Engineering designed the MEP package.

The reopening of the headquarters will reconnect the building to the functional operations of two American Red Cross properties also on “American Red Cross Square” - the city block between 17th and 18th Streets and D and E Streets, NW.
