Clark Interiors Renovates historic American Red Cross Building in Washington

— Renovations to the American Red Cross building at 1730 E Street in downtown Washington are underway. Clark Interiors, a division of Clark Construction, is the general contractor on the 15,200-square-foot project.

Originally built in 1928, the building is known for its dramatic exterior, which consists of white marble and classic Ionic columns. It is comprised of four floors (a garden level, first floor, and a two-story ballroom) and is constructed from masonry load bearing walls, interior steel columns, and a reinforced concrete floor.

The $6 million dollar restoration will completely modernize the historic structure and repair the exterior masonry, clay tile roof, and asphalt paving.

Other improvements include window replacement, fan coil restoration on the garden level and first floor, marble restoration on the stairways, a new kitchen with seating area to function as a servery, and the modernization of security, telephone, data, and audio-visual systems on all floors.

Shalom Baranes Associates of Washington, D.C. designed the project, and Girard Engineering of McLean, Va., is serving as the mechanical/electrical engineer. The project is scheduled for completion for early 2006.
