The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority recently awarded Clark Construction Group, LLC of Tampa a $67.3 million contract to build a six-story economy-parking garage for 5,600 vehicles and an administration building at Tampa International Airport, which will house police, landscape maintenance and parking operations for the airport.
Designed by Gresham, Smith and Partners of Tampa, the parking structure will be constructed of post-tensioned concrete decks and cast-in-place columns that rest on drilled concrete caissons. Over 80,000 cubic yards of concrete will be poured during construction. Finishes on the structure include pre-cast architectural concrete in two styles: smooth face panels at the exterior and elevated decks and a “broken fin” corrugated panel at the ramps between decks.
Signage for the project is quite extensive, featuring an electronic board that displays the location of available parking on different levels and an elaborate glass curtain wall sign on the exterior of the garage highlighted by the Tampa International Airport logo.
Constructed from reinforced concrete masonry units (CMU), the administration building will be equipped with a number of communication systems, including structured cabling for data and telecommunications, PBX systems that will tie into the existing airport system, security and closed circuit television.
The project team includes Howard & Associates, Architects of Tampa, associate architect; Walter P. Moore & Associates, Inc. of Tampa, structural engineer; Brindley Pieters & Associates of Altamonte Springs, Fla., associate structural engineer; URS Corporation Southern of Tampa, civil engineer; TLC Engineering for Architecture of Tampa, MEP engineer; and Ekistics Design Studio of Tampa, landscape architect.
By November 1, 2005, 3,371 spaces of the garage will be opened for passengers with completion of the balances of spaces planned for September 1, 2006. In addition, the contract includes a five-year maintenance agreement for elevators with Schindler Elevator Corporation.
