National Museum of the American Indian - Winner of New Building Category
Sited prominently between the Air & Space Museum and the U.S. Capitol, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian on the National Mall is a centerpiece venue for ceremonies and presentations, as well as a primary exhibition space for Indian arts, histories and cultures. The 260,000-square-foot, five-story structure reflects the relationship between humankind and the rest of nature, with references to the four cardinal directions and the four elements of the world - earth, air, water and fire. Since opening in September 2004, this project has received many accolades and awards for its complicated construction.
AGC recognized the museum for the complexity of the project and its high degree of difficulty; extensive collaboration between team members; excellent craftsmanship, unique features and attention to detail uncommon in most other structures; and the team’s creative solutions to construction challenges.
Fort Stewart Modularity Project - Winner of Design/Build - New Building Category
On this project, over 400,000 square feet of buildings and 102 acres of site development had to be completed in just 142 calendar days for this “New-Army” endeavor to meet the emergency needs of our armed forces.
The toughest obstacle was the first critical milestone where 100,000 square feet of those buildings had to be completed in just 77 calendar days. This task was complicated by the Georgia rainy season and the southeast hurricane season, which were both beginning. All stakeholders were aware that no time extensions were available. Some of the project’s major accomplishments included:
• 102 acres cleared and grubbed in eight days
• Building designs completed and approved in two weeks
• Final construction documents issued in 29 days
• Many miles of needed utility infrastructure completed in first 30 days
• Custom manufactured barracks began arrival on site 20 days after design completion
• Barracks, battalion headquarters, company operations, parking and storage facilities for 240 troops turned over in just 77 days
Partnering, teamwork, the latest web enabled communications systems, GPS controlled site development and concrete placement equipment, and supplier prioritization were just a sample of the necessary elements that made this project a huge success.
