Clark Construction Completes Trauma and Critical Care Building

— Clark Construction Group - California, LP completed Phase I of a multi-phase, $130 million contract at central California’s Community Regional Medical Centers in Fresno. This project involves an acute care building with burn and trauma facilities, central energy plant, cook-chill kitchen and three-level parking garage. The expansion also includes 10 new operating rooms, 68 intensive-care unit beds and two helicopter pads for airlifting patients.

Designed by RTKL of Chicago and Ratcliff of San Francisco, the 340,000-square-foot center provides the highest level of trauma care available in the region and includes state-of-the-art technologies and equipment. Connected to an existing 10-story hospital, the addition features a five-story curved curtain wall with steel and brick accents.

“I am proud of the coordination between our architectural and construction teams that made this vision a reality,” said J. Philip Hinton, CEO of Community Medical Centers.

The trauma center is the centerpiece of the redevelopment effort and features a dramatic cylindrical lobby that climbs the entire height of the building. A link to the existing hospital enables the unification of new and existing floors for maximum space utilization. The exterior features a roman brick identical to the existing masonry. Perforated metal sunscreens, attached to the exterior facade, shield the building’s windows from the strong California sun.

Clark and the architects submitted the project incrementally to the State of California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) rather than in one package. This allowed Clark to keep the project moving by working on portions of the building before the entire building package was approved. The design team coordinated drawing submittals with OSHPD’s standard review periods to ensure permits were received in time to meet the construction schedule.
