The renovation of the 55,000-square-foot American Red Cross Headquarters Building at 17th Street in northwest Washington is underway by Clark Interiors, a division of Clark Construction Group, LLC. This $13 million contract includes a three-month demolition and hazardous material abatement phase, which is substantially complete.
Originally built in 1915, the 17th Street American Red Cross building is designated as a national historic landmark. The building is constructed of perimeter masonry bearing walls and interior steel columns supporting a beam and reinforced concrete floor system. Exterior walls consist of white marble and brick with an inner layer of terra cotta and plaster, while the interior walls are primarily plaster with stone and wood paneling finishes.
The building will be renovated and modernized, with an emphasis on mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and life safety systems needed to provide a safe, comfortable, and efficient work environment for the Red Cross personnel. Other highlights include restoration of the exterior stone masonry, interior wood, and replacing the existing roof and substrate, windows, and elevators. Along with these upgrades, Clark will also complete several site improvements, such as new water and sanitary service, sidewalks, granite curbs, asphalt paving, and landscaping.
Shalom Baranes Associates of Washington, D.C. designed the project, which is scheduled for completion in June 2005. Girard Engineering of McLean, Va. is serving as the MEP engineer.
