The George Washington University just completed a 10-story, 319,000-square-foot student residence hall with underground parking. Featuring 202 one and two bedroom apartment units, the facility can accommodate over 700 students. Clark Residential, a subsidiary of Clark Construction Group, LLC of Bethesda, Md., served as the construction manager on this $42 million project.
The new student residence was built on a vacant site bounded by 23rd Street, G Street and Virginia Avenue and is the first campus building visible to those traveling north on 23rd Street. Designed by Ayers/Saint/Gross of Washington, D.C., the facility complements the surrounding neighborhood architecture with a facade featuring a traditional composition of brick, stone, and precast concrete.
Each of the 202 units includes a furnished living room, full kitchen and full bath off each bedroom. Residents also enjoy a study lounge on each floor. Additional amenities include a community room, computer lab, and a 10,000-square-foot food court on the ground and lower levels.
After the project was underway, the University elected to increase the student occupancy in the building by converting storage space into nine additional apartment units. Through a cooperative effort by the owner, designer, and Clark, the project team completed the facility within the original proposed schedule - ready for occupancy for the Fall 2004 semester.
Tadjer Cohen Edelson of Silver Spring, Md. served as the structural engineer. The Engineering Design Group, Inc. of Washington, D.C. was awarded the mechanical/electrical design contract.
