Improvements at military bases around the nation continue as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that The Clark Construction Group, Inc. of Tampa has been awarded a design-build contract for a barracks complex at Fort Benning, Ga. Trans Systems/LMJ is serving as the architectural partner on the $30 million project. The design-build firm develops a design and guaranteed maximum price based on design criteria issued by the Corp of Engineers through the RFP process. Clark’s design-build entity was chosen based on performance qualifications, experience, price and schedule.
The complex includes a stick-built barrack for 489 soldiers, a company operations facility located at Martin Army Community Hospital and a battalion headquarters for the 1st Battalion (Airborne), 507th Infantry Regiment. These structures will be constructed on three separate sites.
“The barracks are definitely overdue,” said Kenneth Holloway, post master planner. “We need to replace the substandard buildings in use.”
Under the Corps of Engineers SPiRiT program, Clark’s design and construction for the Fort Benning project will incorporate many sustainable design features such as limited site disturbance, water and energy conservation measures, daylighting, indoor air quality monitoring, high recycled content building material, construction waste recycling and reuse management programs and regionally manufactured materials. The project will be completed in Spring 2005.
Established in 1918, Fort Benning is known as the “Home of the Infantry.” It is here that the famed United States Army Infantry School was established and through the years gradually emerged as the most influential Infantry Center in the modern world.
