Clark Construction Group Completes Branch Avenue Storage Yard for WMATA

— With the recent opening of the $90 million Branch Avenue storage yard in Suitland, Md., the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) completed its original plan for the 103-mile system. With storage capacity for 178 rail cars, the six-building complex serves as the storage and maintenance facility for trains serving the Metrorail’s Green Line. Clark Construction Group, LLC served as the general contractor on the facility, which also is the first turnkey delivery project for WMATA.

Located on a 39-acre site outside Washington, D.C., the yard is adjacent to the Branch Avenue Metro Station.

The project required Clark’s team to clear 20 acres, handle 700,000 cubic yards of earthwork, lay 18,000 feet of track, and install 50,000 feet of site utility lines. In addition, Clark also provided system integration services for the project, which includes installation of train control, communications and traction power systems, compatible with existing WMATA facilities.

Designed by Rummel, Klepper & Kahl, LLP, of Baltimore, the facility’s buildings are composed of concrete, masonry and structural steel with brick facades, curtain wall and skylights. Clark’s team also was responsible for the installation of subway maintenance equipment that includes bridge cranes and car hoists.

Other members of the project design team included DeLeuw Cather Company of Washington, D.C., general engineering consultant, and Harry Weese Associates, general architectural consultant.

This project marks the 27th collaboration between Clark and WMATA.

Clark Construction Group, LLC is headquartered in Bethesda, Md.
