Clark Construction Builds $107.5M Hyatt Hotel in San Diego for Manchester Resorts

— An adjoining tower addition will make the Manchester Grand Hyatt on San Diego Bay the largest and tallest waterfront hotel on the west coast, as well as the second largest Hyatt in the chain. Developed by Manchester Resorts of San Diego, the expanded hotel is expected to be critical in attracting large conventions to the city. Clark Construction Group, LLC is serving as general contractor on the project with a construction value of $107.5 million.

Located on 3.29 acres adjacent to Seaport Village and west of the existing hotel, the 34-story tower expansion, designed by Martinez+Cutri of San Diego, will feature 750 additional guest rooms. A central lobby, 30,000-gross-square-foot ballroom and 34,000-gross-square-foot exhibit hall will connect the two towers. The superstructure consists of a steel frame used for both the low-rise podium and high-rise tower and includes a concrete shear wall core that houses the elevators.

Complementing the existing tower, the facade of the addition incorporates a limestone-colored exterior insulation finish system accented by green glass in the curtain wall. The main entrance is highlighted by imported dimensional stone from ground level to the vaulted metal roof, which serves as the mid-point of the towers. Wood panels with high-end finishes line the lobby walls. A dual-colored concrete paving scheme with granite accent pavers and palm trees are featured in the entrance drive.

“With the design work of Martinez+Cutri, coupled with the proven abilities of Clark Construction, we are confident that we will meet our development milestones, creating an invaluable contribution to San Diego,” said Perry Dealy, vice president of operations of Manchester Resorts.

In addition to Clark and the architect, the project team includes G.E.M. Engineering, mechanical engineer; Randall Lamb Associates, electrical engineer; Project Design Consultants, civil engineer; Flore, Lund & Mobayed, structural engineer and Parterre, landscape architect - all of San Diego.

Upon completion in Summer 2003, the Manchester Grand Hyatt will employ almost 1,600 and generate an additional $4 million in revenues for the San Diego region, as well as generating $9 million in rent to the Port of San Diego per year.

Clark Construction Group, LLC is headquartered in Bethesda, Md.
