Clark Construction Completes Biomedical Engineering Lab at Johns Hopkins University

— Underwritten by a $10 million gift from A. James Clark, a new three-story biomedical engineering center named in his honor has been completed at The Johns Hopkins University. Clark Construction Group, LLC built the 60,000-gross-square-foot research facility, which features 13 faculty laboratories, 10 labs for visiting scientists, four undergraduate teaching labs, classrooms and computer facilities, on the University’s Homewood campus.

“Biomedical engineering is a critical field of research for our country and our world,” said Clark. “I have spent most of my life in the construction side of engineering, but contributions from all fields of engineering are vitally important to the future of humanity. It’s incumbent on all of us who have been successful to provide the financial resources to educate and train our future engineering leaders.”

A. James Clark has had a long-standing commitment to engineering education, and sits on the Board of Trustees at Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland Board of Visitors. In 1994, he pledged a $15 million gift to the engineering school at the University of Maryland at College Park. Clark Hall is the first step in the planned creation of the Whitaker Biomedical Engineering Institute at Johns Hopkins that will foster collaboration among Hopkins faculty and outside researchers. The building allows the Hopkins biomedical engineering program to expand its focus, explore new research directions and enhance its teaching programs.

With design architect Robert A.M. Stern of New York, HLM Design of Bethesda, Md. created a facility that complements the existing buildings on the Homewood campus with a façade of brick and cast stone. Hipped slate roofs with copper dormers top the building. Students, faculty and visitors enter the handsome three-story lobby that incorporates marble and slate flooring, ornamental stair handrails and extensive wood trim.

The project team also included RMF Engineering of Baltimore, Md., mechanical and electrical engineer; Whitney, Baiamampey & Cox of Baltimore, Md., site engineer; and SST Planners of Arlington, Va., laboratory design and planning. HLM Design also served as the structural engineer.

Clark Construction Group, LLC is based in Bethesda, Md.
