With over 30 million passengers expected to use the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac) this year, the Port of Seattle has begun an ambitious multi-billion remodeling and expansion program. Clark Construction Group, LLC was recently awarded a $212 million contract to construct a 900,000-gross-square-foot terminal expansion and new south concourse.
Built in 1947, Sea-Tac’s original terminal was a Quonset hut set on 900 acres. Now occupying 2,500 acres and offering flights on more than 25 airlines, Sea-Tac ranks as the 18th busiest airport in the United States, according to Airport Council International.
South Terminal
After demolition of the existing Concourse A, Clark will build a new concourse to be known as the South Terminal. The concourse, which doubles the number of gates to 14, also will feature moving walkways, four retail stores, nine food concessions, new baggage system, loading dock, auditorium and airline offices. Showcasing a view of Mount Rainier, an international arrivals hall with a 70-foot ceiling and large windows will be the focal point of the structure.
While dining and enjoying the view, travelers also will be kept informed of flight information by a large overhead display. Retail and restaurant space will double to over 51,000-gross-square-feet.
Designed by NBBJ of Seattle, the new Concourse A will take advantage of the spectacular views. More windows will be incorporated into the design, and the previous brown and gray palette will be replaced with a more vibrant color scheme.
Ancillary Facilities
Clark’s responsibilities also include the construction of a new pedestrian bridge from the South Terminal to an existing parking garage, the re-grading and expansion of the South Ground Transportation Lot, and improvements to the existing landscaping. Extensive infrastructure work is planned and features new electrical feeders, reconfiguration of the adjacent Air Cargo Road, relocation of airfield security gates, apron pavement replacement, and utility relocation and replacement.
The Sea-Tac redevelopment project is managed by Clark’s Oakland, Calif. office. Completion date is scheduled for 2003. Clark Construction Group, LLC is headquartered in Bethesda, Md.
