The U.S. General Services Administration and Clark Construction Group, LLC, recently completed the U.S. Federal Courthouse in Montgomery, Ala., the pair’s sixth project together. Constructed behind an existing historic courthouse, the 297,000-square-foot, $46 million facility was Clark’s first project in the state of Alabama.
A total of 14 courtrooms for the U.S. Middle District, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, and U.S. Magistrate Court are included in the new courthouse, as well as offices for the U.S. District Court Clerk, U.S. Attorney, U.S. Marshal’s Service, the Bankruptcy Court Clerk, and GSA. In addition to the courthouse, Clark constructed a 50,000-square-foot precast concrete parking garage.
Barganier, Davis, Sims Architects of Montgomery designed the six-story building with an architectural limestone facade to closely match the original historic courthouse, built in 1932. An ornamental lobby anchors the building, and a pedestrian bridge connects the new structure to the existing facility.
The Montgomery project continues Clark’s and GSA’s partnering in the construction of courthouses to meet the needs of the U.S. Courts and for the American taxpayers. Other projects include the $170 million, 790,000-square-foot U.S. Federal Courthouse in Boston completed in July of 1998 and the $51 million Roman L. Hruska U.S. Courthouse in Omaha, Neb., just recently completed in April 2000.
In addition to Clark and the architect, the project team included Heery International, Inc., of Atlanta, construction manager; Sherlock, Smith & Adams, Inc., of Montgomery, Ala., civil engineer; and Lane Bishop York Delahay, Inc., of Birmingham, Ala., structural engineer.
Clark Construction Group, LLC is headquartered in Bethesda, Md.
