Clark Construction Earns Merit Award for Johns Hopkins Research Building

— The Johns Hopkins University’s Bunting-Blaustein Building earned an award of merit from the Baltimore Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors for new construction over $5 million. The project team will be honored at the chapter’s annual Awards of Excellence program in April.

Clark/Smoot, A Joint Venture served as construction manager on the $48 million laboratory building for cancer research at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The project, which continues a successful history of collaboration between Clark and the Johns Hopkins system, is the sixth project completed by the company for the university and the hospital.

Architect-of-record and structural engineer HDR, Inc. of Alexandria, Va. and design architect, Zimmer-Gunsul-Fresca Partnership of Portland, Oregon, designed a 242,000-gross-square-foot facility that complements the rest of the campus. The facade of the 10-story laboratory features precast concrete parapet copings, window sills and window lintels. An atrium at the north elevation extends from the ground floor to the third floor and is sheathed in glass and metal.

Two below-grade levels house mechanical/electrical and a loading dock. Also included at the lowest level is an underground tunnel connecting the building to an adjacent campus loading dock.

The interior of the structure is designed so that space above each floor of laboratories can accommodate mechanical and electrical services while enabling repairs and equipment upgrades to be made without disruption of lab activity. Additional height in the laboratory areas allows two floors of office space for every one floor of laboratory space, resulting in 10 stories of office space at each end of the building, with five stories of laboratories in between.

“By gathering leading cancer investigators under one roof, the new research facility will help us build more quickly upon our past successes and advance treatments more effectively,” says Martin D. Abeloff, M.D., director of The Johns Hopkins Oncology Center. “Discoveries in cancer genetics, gene therapy and pharmacogenetics have increased tremendously during the last decade. Enhancing the environment in which our scientists work will lead to even greater rates of discovery.” Abeloff also calls the Bunting-Blaustein Building “critical” to the success of recruiting new faculty and cultivating the careers of young researchers.

In addition to Clark/Smoot and the architects, the project team included civil engineer, Rummel, Klepper & Kahl of Baltimore; laboratory planner, Earl Walls of San Diego and mechanical and electrical engineer, Ross Murphy Finklestein of Baltimore.

Clark Construction Group, LLC is headquartered in Bethesda, Md.
