Clark Construction Builds High Tech Student Academic Center for Gallaudet University

— Gallaudet University is developing a new student academic center that will reinforce the University’s role as the leader in educating deaf and hard of hearing students. Clark Construction Group, LLC is serving as general contractor on this $16.5 million project.

Gallaudet University, the world’s only university in which all programs and services are specifically designed to accommodate the deaf, was founded in 1864 by the U.S. Congress, and its charter was signed by President Abraham Lincoln.

Designed by Einhorn Yaffee Prescott of Washington, D.C., the new student academic center includes the interior demolition and renovation of an existing 51,000-gross-square-foot student building and construction of an adjoining 65,000-gross-square-foot academic facility. Architectural highlights include a full-height curtain wall at the entrance and a two-level atrium topped with a “light-house” style lantern. The brick and precast facade of the two-story facility complements the rest of the campus and houses a food court, pub, auditorium, post office and bookstore.

The Student Academic Center includes high tech classrooms with raised access flooring and a multi-use, multi-media computer laboratory, which will be accessible to the Gallaudet community seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

In addition to Clark and the architect, the project team includes Cagley & Associates of Rockville, Md. Einhorn Yaffee Prescott also designed the mechanical and electrical systems. The anticipated completion date for the project is the summer of 2002. Construction progress can be viewed by accessing the project web cam, located at http://depts.gallaudet.edu/sac/.

Clark Construction Group, LLC is headquartered in Bethesda, Md.
