The laboratory and office complex for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Research Triangle Park, N.C. reached another milestone as Clark Construction Group, LLC recently turned over the first two areas of the Core Building and the High Bay Building to the General Services Administration (GSA). One of the largest construction projects in the Triangle, the one-million-gross-square-foot complex consolidates many of the EPA’s operations and will house 2000 employees.
Throughout the design and construction of the complex, careful attention was paid to the use of materials and resources to minimize environmental impacts. Clark implemented an aggressive recycling and waste management program on the project, reusing construction waste materials and diverting them from landfills. In keeping with EPA’s mission, architects HOK of Washington, D.C. and The Roberts/Stacy Group of Raleigh, N.C. designed a facility that blends with the natural environment. Buildings are integrated into the landscape and special precautions were taken to protect the forest, wetlands and wildlife habitats. The project team also includes Weidlinger Associates of New York, structural engineer and R.G. Vanderweil Engineers of Boston, mechanical/electrical engineers.
A unique and innovative project, the complex also was recognized by the White House. GSA, EPA and Clark Construction earned the highest federal award for “Recycling Construction Waste at the new EPA Campus, Research Triangle Park, N.C.” This prestigious recognition is part of the 2001 White House “Closing the Circle” awards program, which promotes the government’s recycling and green purchasing efforts.
“This year’s honorees exemplify our federal workforce commitment to preserve the environment and precious resources by increasing the purchase of green products and services, reducing the generation of wastes and establishing highly effective environmental management programs at their locations,” said Juan D. Lopez, Acting Chief of Staff of the White House Task Force on Recycling. “These local heroes have looked beyond the status quo to blaze new paths in waste and pollution prevention that will truly benefit our future generations.”
