A joint venture of Clark Construction Group, LLC and A. Epstein & Sons International, Inc. of Chicago recently completed a 1.36-million-square-foot food distribution center near Lancaster, Penn. Located on a 165-acre site, the project was completed for Albertson’s, Inc. of Boise, Id. The facility serves as the major East Coast distribution center for the large supermarket chain and includes four buildings, the largest of which is the warehouse facility.
Albertson’s Food and Drug Stores include the chains Acme, Jewell, Osco, Sav-on, Seessel’s, Max and Super Saver. The distribution center replaces existing facilities in Philadelphia and Lancaster.
Facility Engineers, Inc. of Smyrna, Ga., has designed the facility as functional yet aesthetically pleasing. Custom metallic paint was used on the exterior insulated metal panel system, which is highlighted by a curtainwall window system with tinted and tempered glass.
The main warehouse, divided into smaller components, provide areas for a variety of grocery products, both dry and perishable. Shipping and receiving is handled through the 194 loading docks located at the perimeter of the building.
In addition to Clark and the architect, the project team included Greenfield Architects, Ltd. of Lancaster, Penn., structural/mechanical/electrical engineer, and Spotts, Stevens, & McCoy, Inc. of Reading, Penn., civil engineer.
