Clark Construction Begins $165.2 M Caltrans Headquarters in Los Angeles

— A new headquarters for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 7 division is now underway in downtown Los Angeles. The State of California Department of General Services selected Main and First Design/Build Associates, a design/build entity led by Clark Construction Group, LLC of Irvine, Calif., for the $165.2 million project.

“We have begun work on a project that will certainly be a source of pride to everyone associated with it as well as a primary contributor to the increasing vitality of downtown Los Angeles,” said Secretary Maria Contreras-Sweet of the California Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.

Located at First and Main Streets, the complex will feature 1142-car underground parking spaces, auto shop, warehouse, teleconference room, public cafeteria, and a childcare facility for employees and the public. The existing Caltrans office building from 1949 and an annex built in 1960 will be demolished once the new facility is completed. In addition to California state transportation employees, approximately 500 City of Los Angeles Department of Transportation employees also will work in the building.

Main and First Design/Build Associates consists of Clark Construction, Morphosis of Santa Monica, Calif., design architect; Gruen Associates of Los Angeles, associate architect; Urban Partners of Los Angeles, developer; John A. Martin & Associates, Inc. of Los Angeles, structural engineer; and Ove Arup & Partners California, Ltd. of Los Angeles, mechanical/electrical, fire protection and telecommunications engineer. The State of California Department of General Services is the owner.

Expected to be a centerpiece of the downtown Los Angeles renaissance, the Caltrans District 7 Headquarters is anticipated to open in Fall 2004.
