I-66-Route 29/Linton Hall Interchange Improvements
Shirley Contracting is leading the I-66-Route-29/Linton Hall Interchange Improvements project. This project is the last phase of the Gainesville/I-66 Improvements parent project. The project will widen Route 29 to six lanes from I-66 to Virginia Oaks Drive and creates a grade-separated interchange for Route 29/Linton Hall Road.
The project will improve traffic flows by eliminating driveway entrances, two at-grade Norfolk Southern Railroad crossings, and the at-grade intersection of Route 29/Linton Hall Road. Safety for motorists and pedestrians also will be improved with the elimination of the at-grade railroad crossings and construction of pedestrian facilities.
The phased construction requires over one million cubic yards of earthwork operations, which includes approximately 105,000 cubic yards of excavation and 947,000 cubic yards of embankment. Approximately 59,100 tons of aggregate base will be installed, and 123,500 tons of asphalt will be placed. The project team will manage the construction and removal of several traffic detours during construction as well as provide traffic control. The scope of work also includes ground improvements, storm and water utility installation/relocation(s), signal installation/modifications, roadway lighting, TMS, signage, concrete crash walls, four new bridges, and 10 MSE retaining walls consisting of approximately 288,000 square feet of precast concrete panels and wire mesh facing.
Shirley completed the Gainesville/I-66 Improvements project's phase III, the $81.4 million I-66 Widening project.
