University of Maryland Byrd Stadium's Tyser Tower to Triple In Size

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Following the University of Maryland’s final home football game of 2007, Clark Construction Group took the field to begin construction on Byrd Stadium’s Tyser Tower. The expansion of Tyser Tower will add 66,000 square feet to the existing structure while the existing 33,000 square-foot tower will be completely renovated.

The work on Tyser Tower, located on the south side of Maryland’s football stadium, includes the addition of a five-story tower that will provide 64 luxury suites, a full-service kitchen, working press lounge, television and radio booths, and football coach boxes. The total spectator occupancy of the renovated and expanded Tyser Tower will be 3,300.

The Tyser Tower expansion structure will be constructed out of cast-in-place concrete. After the 2008 football season, everything but the structure of the existing Tyser Tower will be demolished and structural steel will be used to expand the footprint of the existing tower to match the new structures on either side. The completed Tyser Tower will feature a brick and EIFS facade, with punch windows and glass storefronts allowing for unobstructed views of the field.

Clark has a long history with the University of Maryland and Byrd Stadium. The company completed a four-phase modernization of the original, 1950’s-era stadium in 1995. That effort included renovations to the existing cast-in-place concrete stadium bowl, the construction of a state-of-the-art football team building, and erecting a 14,000-seat upper deck along the stadium’s north side. Omni Construction completed the original Tyser Tower in 1991.Among the many facilities Clark has built on the University of Maryland’s College Park campus over the past 50 years are the university’s Chapel, McKeldin Library, the Zoology-Psychology Building, Campus Recreation Center, the Kim Engineering Building and its Fischell Addition, and several dormitories.

Heery International of Atlanta is serving as the architect for this project and ReStl Designers, Inc. of Washington, D.C. will provide structural engineering services.

Clark anticipates completion of the Tyser Tower expansion and renovation prior to the 2009 Maryland Terrapin football season.
