Our Integrated Approach to Healthcare Construction
A successful healthcare project starts with early communication between the builder, designer, and healthcare client.Whether the team is informally collaborative or is operating under a design-build or early contractor involvement delivery method, Clark adds significant value to any project through:
- Constructability Reviews
- Life Cycle Analyses
- Benchmarking
- Materials and Equipment Procurement
- Cost Modeling
Working in concert with designers, facilities personnel, and end-users from the planning phase helps minimize our client’s capital investment. Clark is more than a builder, we provide a full range of healthcare construction services, and assist clients in all aspects of the decision making and construction logistics planning, including:
- Materials, commodities, and labor selection and procurement
- Medical equipment procurement, coordination, and installation
Specialized Experience
While we approach every healthcare project with the same principles – ensuring safety, understanding end-user needs, collaborating early with all project team members, and earning client trust – no two healthcare projects are alike. As detailed, we have experience with a number of special project considerations.
Working Within an Active Hospital
Clark is dedicated to providing a safe healthcare environment for the patients, staff, and visitors to a hospital undergoing construction. A successful safety program for an active medical facility requires a concentrated personal effort by the project team and close planning and communication between all affected stakeholders. Our comprehensive safety approach includes:
- Traffic Control Analysis
- Dust Control
- Worker, Material, and Debris Removal Travel Routes
- Construction Fence Design
- Overhead and Walkway Protection
- Vibration and Noise Mitigation
- Utility Shutdown Procedure
- Emergency Response Procedures
- Emergency Patient Transport Procedures
- Helicopter Flight Paths
- Infection Control Procedures
- Interim Life Safety Measures
- Phasing and Disruption Planning
- Construction Work-Shift Planning
- Make-Ready Project Planning
Seismic Retrofits and Upgrade
With extensive experience in California, we have reinforced existing hospitals to meet state codes and withstand massive earthquakes. These projects are typically in occupied, active hospitals and present significant planning and execution challenges. The seismic design solutions are typically very intrusive and involve heavy structural work throughout the facility. Clark has demonstrated success in keeping hospitals operational, with no deterioration of patient care, while bringing a facility up to current seismic standards.
Urban Construction/Building in Limited Space
With projects in downtown Los Angeles, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., as well as on active military bases and college campuses, Clark has experience working through the challenges of limited site access, tying into existing structures, and leading a large-scale construction project amid the day-today activities that occur in the crowded urban landscape.
Military Healthcare
Our experience in both the military and healthcare sectors uniquely positions us to deliver high-quality facilities. We bring a collaborative approach to military healthcare projects, working alongside all entities. The open approach, combined with our unparalleled experience, helps overcome the inherent challenges of military healthcare construction including working in highly-secured areas and integrating with existing systems.
